about

‘Dink’s Song’, also known as ‘Fare Thee Well’, is an American folk song discovered in 1909 by song collector John Lomax. Travelling though a camp of levee-builders on the Brazos river in Texas, he recorded an African American woman named Dink singing it as she washed her husband’s clothes. It was first published in Lomax’s American Ballads and Folk Songs in 1934 and has been performed by many musicians including Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Jeff Buckley, and Oscar Isaac in the film Inside Llewelyn Davis.
